Social stress and neurogenesis:

Recently we have begun a new line of research on the effects of social stress on neurogenesis. Only recently has it been realized that new cells are continually being made in two locations in the brain (the dentate gyrus and the olfactory bulb). Little is known, however, about what influences the rate of production of new cells, their survival, or what might be their functions. We are investigating the effects of social stress on the birth and survival of new cells and hope to also get some insight into the roles that these new cells have. These issues have potential significance for human health and the treatment of degenerative diseases of the brain.
