Interests:
The objective of my research is to understand the neural and hormonal mechanisms underlying social behavior and learning. How are long-term relationships formed and maintained? What are the neural and behavioral mechanisms by which females choose male mates on the basis of song? What are the neural, hormonal, and behavioral mechanisms of social memories? How do animals, and people, remember social partners? I address these questions using non-human animals, primarily birds, and a semi-natural, social setting wherever possible. My research program answers questions about behavioral neuroscience, learning and memory, and provides an animal model for human monogamy, learning, and social recognition. In answering these questions, I use the following techniques: immunocytochemistry, drug infusions in specific brain areas, hormone implants and injections, bioacoustics, and behavioral observations.
